Name: Meer Nardel Age: 22 Gender: Male Race: Human - Adept | Height: 6'1 Weight: 162 lbs Alignment: Neutral Good |
Physical Description: Standing at about 6'1, Meer has a rather average build but a bit on the scrawny side due to the amount of energy he puts out in conflicts and his heavy reliability on his magic. His rusty red hair runs wild in the back but is forced to spike in an arc from the middle to his left in front with the right side combed down. Often he is avoided thanks to his expression quite often being one of boredom, disapproval of those around him, or even just a glare from his dark brown eyes.
Clothing/Accessories: He prefers to go around wearing simple light clothing underneath a long coat. Commonly he wears a dark, collared, long sleeved shirt (normally brown, red, or black). A thin black belt with a silver buckle lays around the waste of his charcoal pants that hang with a bit of slack. His boots are a dark brown, as well as the gloves he keeps in his pocket.
Meer keeps his coat done up most of the time no matter the weather. It buttons on his right side until his waste so as to allow for full leg movement. It has a folded collar and various thick edge lines that are charcoal colored. Overall the coat looks heavier than it really is, though is unquestionably warm. ((You can imagine something similar to Albert's coat from Suikoden III. With major differences of course but this is the closest I could think of ))
Personality: Meer is often viewed as a jerk, focused only on what he wants rather than what is in the best interest of others. He's very quiet and more of a listener, most often just standing and staring at whoever is bothering him. But that is only the first impression he portrays to anyone he doesn't know. Until proven otherwise the adept assumes inept capabilities compared to his own talents and so views many others as lesser. Not very many people get to see his more caring side. Only when a common enemy threatens does he show a deep consideration for the well-being of others and usually does whatever he can to fend off the attacker.
Meer can also be quite competitive though usually never issues a challenge himself unless it is to shut someone up. He has a constant drive to prove himself to those that claim to be equal or better than he is. Despite the possibility it's an arrogant young-un Meer is known not to hold much if anything back when invoking his magical capabilities, as he's more of an immediate heavy hitter rather than warming up to a progressively harder battle; he's not much for drama or cliche final battles. Unfortunately for others the power Meer 'boasts' isn't a bluff and this just boosts his own arrogance. Luckily for the energetic individuals looking for recognition the adept is surprisingly calm and patient.
Abilities
Limitations
As mentioned before the other two base elements Meer has difficulties with handling extensively. With his focus more on water and earth, the extent he can manage the other two is minimal. Fires he can only mildly guide if they are small. He cannot feed it energy and though he could snuff a small flame out it'd be much easier for him to just douse it. As for winds, he cannot encourage or guide. The extent of his manipulation is what he can do with gaseous water combinations.
Meer's healing capability encompasses minor wounds. He can mend breaks in the skin and stem blood flow if the surface area is smaller than his hand span [so ~ 5"].[/ul]
Weaknesses
Strengths
Other:
He was born and raised in southern England around Canterbury* until he was 17. His family then moved after some suspicion began rising about their family.
Has retained a thick accent mostly out of stubbornness to sound otherwise and paying very close attention to his own speech.[/ul]
History: The line of 'abnormality' in Meer's family goes back a while, each generation seeming to gain strength rather than wane despite the mixing of 'regular people' and 'magical'. While his mother was normal, his father had a knack for playing with water but had expanded his divinity to mild alterations with the weather. Meer inherited his father's special abilities, but was naturally gifted with an affinity for earthen manipulations in addition to water. Unlike his father who was rather lighthearted and clumsy Meer took his abilities quite seriously upon discovering them at a very early age. He loved his father but couldn't help but inwardly call him a fool at times with the way he acted around other people after tripping or something of the like.
Meer took to practicing a broad range of manipulations but swiftly discovered his undeniable strength with the base of earth and water. Deciding that it would be better to excel with his innate strengths rather than expanding his magical range and thus in his eyes weakening it, the young adept spent countless hours of his free time experimenting with his limits. Often he was given praise from his parents for his quick learning and creative usage.
It was only his parents he showed his successes to however, and was careful not to expose his gifts to anyone outside the house. He was smart enough to realize the possible repercussions. But because of this he didn't really develop any social ties. Acquaintances yes, but not really any friends, which made the move his parents decided to do when he was 17 very easy in that respect.
Unfortunately, a few years later while Meer was in University the first 'abnormal' was discovered and put everyone in a panic. The public reaction was disturbing and did put him at unease but to avoid any second glances since he was already decently unknown to but a few on campus the adept finished his year before heading to his parent's place a few hours away. He wasn't too worried as his family had successfully hidden for years, generations even, but before now no one was looking for something of the sort.
For the summer his father arranged a favor with a friend to allow Meer to work as a local landscaper, but Meer never did go back to the University. Measures to deal with the abnormals quickly became erratic in vigilante hands. Bands of late-teen misfits stressing out the police force as well as the 'gifted' increased aggression in the area making the streets a mini-war zone in some of the less privileged areas of town. As if this alone wasn't enough to sicken the adept it wasn't uncommon to see round-ups every week. The irrational behavior sparked a bit of fury within him; he wouldn't go back to campus and be surrounded by imbeciles like this.
Eventually word reached them about Adlehyde and his mother strongly urged the two men of her family to pack up and move. But his father convinced her otherwise, pointing out their successful obscurity so far and how the island would be an instant brand and make traveling difficult. He wanted to give the world some time to adjust and hoped things would level out.
Unwilling to sit around waiting for the world to fix itself, Meer decided to debate entering this protected city of ability afflicted people and so arranged a transfer in his job to the coast near Meropis. He didn't so much care about the job, the adept just wanted some defense as to his proximity to the island in case he encountered suspicion. It didn't take long however for him to stop caring about concealing his true self as his annoyance continued to rise toward the situation. After a few weeks he sent notice to his parents of his intentions and instructions for what to do should authorities become an issue.
Within a month Meer found his earlier preparations value as a simple trip to a store turned into an escape from the military. Really, it was partial curiosity that got him caught up in a small group of fleeing abnormals. Following them to a church he began his venture to the island ahead of schedule, moving through an underground path to the docks with a vampire and an immortal. The vampire, Kira, luckily had done this before and guided the other two safely to the ship that would give them passage onto Meropis.
*Will replace with a suitable place for this world if one is ever defined since we're now using a made up world.
